There are around about a dozen conferences that take place in the United States each year that are aimed at people who desire to see the church communicate better, people like me. Every time I hear about these conferences, I find myself wishing I could be there, just to hear some insights in how we can really do things better. It sucks though, because I don’t have the money to make it to any, let alone all the conferences I want to, that take place in the US. Thankfully, being communicators, the people that attend and speak at these conferences tend to want to share what was said and done. One of the people who really actively shares what was said is none other than Tim Schraeder.
Tim can be found on Twitter at @timschraeder and his blog, www.timschraeder.com, is full of his notes from conferences such as Cultivate, Story and Innovate. Tim, as Director for Communications at Park Community Church in Chicago, also has a lot of valuable stuff to say. I really encourage you to check his blog out.

Media is not the panacea

“Media is not the panacea. It will not solve all our problems. People come to Christ through relationships.”

This statement by Russell Powell in the media watch session at Create Conference on the weekend definitely resonated with me. In the last couple of years I have developed a disdain for church public relations departments, and this is probably one of the key reasons. I am concerned by the tendency for Christian organisations to invest large amounts of resources towards trying to get some column inches in the local or metropolitan paper. The …

Why I’m Excited About The I Heart Film

The I Heart Film premieres in Australia this Wednesday evening November 18 and if you’ve been following my tweets or facebook status you’ll know I’m really excited.

Created by the Hillsong United team and some really talented video guys, The I Heart Film is part of a project to really take a look at what we should be doing as a church about many of the injustices in our world. A quote from a trailer that really struck me was, “if what we’re doing behind those four walls is having no impact on the streets we go down to get …

Tips for Basic Video

Most people these days have a small video camera that shoots in HD which is good enough quality for the TV networks to accept. The key to good video however lies in how well it is shot, not the quality of your equipment. The following are a few tips to make your footage go from good to great: Use a tripod. It is near impossible to hold a lightweight camera steady, so most of the time it is best to use a tripod. If you must go handheld, keep the camera zoomed out wide and stand closer …

Three things I like and learned from 24

Critical analysis can be really helpful for ideas about how you can improve your own content when the time comes. Recently I killed a whole lot of time watching my way through all seven seasons of the TV show 24. Here are three things that I thought they did really well:
Gripping plot
24 is known for its ticking time bomb plots. There is always a deadline to the plot – if Jack doesn’t get to the hospital in the next 40 minutes, all the patients will die. As a viewer you want to see the hero succeed but the obstacle is …

Why Being New is Valuable

I’m new at most things I do. I often like to think I’m really good and somewhat talented at the things I do but usually that requires me to compare to someone who knows nothing about what I think I’m good at. That sort of comparison is good for the ego but most of the time I compare myself to people far more experienced and skilled at what they do than myself. That comparison is humbling and untapped is quite dissatisfying.

Being new can be a really great thing. When someone is new at something they ask questions, they experiment, …
